For the 2025/2026 school year, La Capitolare is once again offering a range of guided tours and educational workshops for primary and secondary schools.


Accompanied by the Library's scientific staff, students will discover the main stages of the Capitolare's long and adventurous history. They will be able to observe closely the materials used in ancient times to produce books, as well as some original texts. The guided tour can also be combined with a workshop of your choice, during which students can try out the activity of amanuensis or illuminators.


Visits take place from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., by appointment.

INSECT EGGS AND GOOSE FEATHERS
For primary school


How is a book made? There is no better place to find out than a library: and not just any library, but the oldest library in the world still in activity! Children will be able to retrace the adventurous history of the Capitolare and discover the laborious process by which books were made in ancient times. The protagonists of this journey will be sheepskins, goose feathers, insect nests, sparkling minerals, and other materials that, through skilled craftsmanship, were transformed into precious manuscripts.
Duration of the guided tour: 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Ticket: €5 per student (free for teachers and students with disability cards).
Note that the price for the guided tour in English is 6€ per student.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM
For primary school


Starting from some texts and images from the Capitolare, students will discover bizarre and fabulous stories, legends, and fascinating symbols involving mermaids, dragons, and other creatures. Participants will then be invited to unleash their imagination to give life, shape, color, and characteristics to their own imaginary creature, creating a real little bestiary.
Workshop duration: 30/45 minutes.
Ticket: €3 per student (free for teachers and students with disability cards).

STORIES AMONG THE STARS
For primary school


What are constellations? Which legendary characters are they named after? What stories did ancient peoples, fascinated by the night sky, imagine among the stars? Starting from illustrations in some Capitolare texts, pupils will discover ancient stories related to the world of astronomy, then use their imagination to create their own personal constellation.
Workshop duration: 30/45 minutes.
Ticket: €3 per student (free for teachers and students with disability cards).

A workshop in which students can experience firsthand the work of a scribe with a reed pen and goose quill. 
Workshop duration: 30-45 minutes.

BRUSHES AND COLORS. ILLUMINATED INITIALS
For primary school


Once the copying work is complete, the illuminator steps in to decorate and bring light to the text-rich pages. Initials decorated with plant and floral elements, arabesques and squiggles, animals and monstrous figures, even entire narrative scenes. Students can unleash their imagination by creating their own personalized illuminated initial.
Workshop duration: 30-45 minutes.
Ticket: €3 per student (free for teachers and students with disability cards).

LA CAPITOLARE, ITS HISTORY, AND ITS TREASURES. A JOURNEY THROUGH ANCIENT MANUSCRIPTS, RIDDLES, AND GREAT FIGURES OF ITALIAN LITERATURE.
For secondary school


A journey to discover the history of the oldest library in the world still in operation nowadays. From the Scriptorium to the current Library, a journey through manuscripts and ancient printed books, famous writers, including Dante and Petrarch, devastation and reconstruction. Some particularly significant works will mark the reconstruction of these historical stages, including the famous Veronese riddle, the palimpsest of Gaius' Istitutiones, illuminated books, and great musical manuscripts.
Duration of the guided tour: 1 hour 30 minutes.
Ticket: €5 per student. (free for teachers and students with disability cards).
Note that the price for the guided tour in English is 6€ per student.

For secondary school


A workshop in which students, through the type of writing uncial, with its rounded and sumptuous forms, used between late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, can experience firsthand the work of a scribe with a reed pen and quill. 
Workshop duration: 30/45 minutes.
Ticket: €3 per student (free for teachers and students with disability cards).

After a brief introduction to the world of ancient inks and their composition and preparation, students will try their hand at making their own little bottle of carbon black ink, based on ancient recipes. A journey through history and chemistry in medieval manuscripts.
Workshop duration: 30/45 minutes.
